Bellow, Herzog, Reivers

Margrum had a flash of insight: Jotting down! he said. Fiction (I’m not talking about poetry yet) is that which has seen the one who has jotted: Herzog jots down but Bellow writes of Herzog. Bellow does not jot, or jots and dignifies it with the context we call Herzog. Herzog is the one whom he has seen in himself jot down. Herzog is the name given to the stand Bellow has taken on his jotted thought. Herzog is the name given to Bellow for having had perspective on his jotted thought. Bellow is the name given to that which surrounds Herzog but what was Bellow first — what but Herzog’s jotted thought?
